The town is composed of the capital Castrocaro Terme and the two hamlets of Terra del Sole and Pieve Salutare. The town, which is part of the historical region called Romagna Tuscany, until 1923 belonged to the province of Florence.

The “Castello del Capitano delle Artiglierie” rises in the gentle hilly landscape of the Tosco-Romagnolo Preappennino, near the thermal baths of Castrocaro, in the hinterland of the Adriatic Riviera. It is an integral part of the fortress city of Terra del Sole, a rare example of an ideal city, perfectly preserved, built by order of Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1564 by Baldassarre Lanci.
